Playdates & feeling like an adult

picnikfile_ro3Lhf

Do you ever stop yourself in the middle of something and think "Holy cow, I'm an adult?" As expected it's been happening more than ever now that I'm a parent, and sometimes it totally sneaks up on me in the weirdest places. For instance just the other morning I was pulling out of our garage and I had these thoughts- "I have a garage." "I have a garage with shelving in it, with things organized on them." "Ahhh I'm an adult!" Do you know what I mean, or am I just crazy? We'll be doing weird things, like spending a Sunday afternoon at Home Depot, or anything else that seems "adult-like" and I'll think about this.

This past Thursday Autumn invited some of our girlfriends over to her house for a playdate. I've spent countless days over there, but for some reason on this day I kept thinking about how crazy it was that we were all Moms now, going over to a friend's house to get our kids together. It's something my Mom did all the time when we were younger- we spent so many afternoon at our friends' houses, our Moms talking in the kitchen- and it was kind of neat to think that now I was the mama doing these things.  It's all come full-circle.

It was a great day though, and so fun to see all of the kids together, since we had a huge age range. Nat's little girl Scarlet is 10 months, Henry is 14 months, Autumn's kids are 23 months and 3 1/2, and Anita's daughter Lola is 2 1/2.

Here are a few photos from our day-

  1. I think about "being an adult" all the time! My husband and I actually just got done shoveling snow, doing laundry, and dealing with a testy 3 year old. Grown up things!

  3. I feel you, girl. Funny thing is, as I read the sentence about spending your Sunday afternoon at Home Depot, I turned to Addison and said "Oh! We forgot to get some weatherstripping stuff for the fridge"...all while he's folding laundry, I'm drinking coffee and talking to my BFF about going to the gym, not out to party. No kidlets, but I feel you. Adulthood has, and will continue to arrive.

But the good thing is that, this morning, right before we started laundry and being 'adults' for the day, I suggested we play a game of hide and go seek in honor of national squirrel appreciation day. So at least we still have that going on.
    LOVE YOU! <3

  4. I always have those "i am an adult" moments, paying bills, talking about finances and when it really hit me was when we got our first babysitter and i drove her home..and thought wasn't it a couple years ago that i was the babysitter getting driven home...it was soooo weird..

  5. I have those moments all of the time! My 4 year old goes to preschool and about once a week I think, "holy crap! I'm a mom! I'm all grown up and my baby's in preschool!! next will be kindergarten and then he'll be married with babies of his own!". I know there will be some other things in between of course, but still. Sad.
Oh and I filed our taxes yesterday. It excited me to get them filed knowing that we're going to be paying off some things. It's bittersweet really.

  6. Such cuties! I have this thought all the time... But it also usually comes with some anxiety for me like "You've got a kid now and you should get your act together and tackle that pile of laundry that's been sitting there for a week- or maybe even two!". Not to even mention the financial stress of adulthood- but it does have its perks :)

On an unrelated note I'm finding I can't comment to your blog on my computer (just my phone). I think I commented once before the "reply" feature was added and another blogger (Danielle) says she thinks the new feature doesn't work with Explorer. Not sure if you mind that explorer users can't comment but thought I'd let you know!

  8. I definitely have those moments. Especially now whilst pregnant with my first. Most of the time though I feel like I'm just playing at being a grown up. It seems crazy that they are going to let me take this little baby home. And then I remember, oh that's right. I'm a grown up.

  9. HENRY'S HAIR.

    the end.

p.s. I get those, oh my God, I'm an adult moments all the time...and I'm only 20. Is that strange?

  10. Haha I feel that same thing (though I don't have kids). When we bought our last car we figured it'd be a used something or other, but through some awesome program Toyota had going on I got a brand-new Corolla. Rob and I kept saying "we have a BRAND NEW car," "we're going to have that car for YEARS." So weird! And now we're looking at places to rent in Santa Fe, and they'll most likely be HOUSES instead of apartments! Like real people!

I think the strangest, though, was when I realized that at age 25, in terms of having children, I am safely out of the period when people are surprised to hear you're pregnant and well into the time when people EXPECT to hear you're pregnant. Not to judge anyone that has kids before 25 of course...was just weird to realize that people were probably starting to wonder when it would happen! haha

  12. I totally have those "adult" moments all the time. I recently received a Best Buy gift card for my birthday from my In-Laws. They intended it for a new car stereo, but my first thought was, "Yay, I can put this towards a new washer and dryer!" My next thought was, "Wow, I'm more excited about appliances than stereos...I'm such an ADULT."

  14. i totally have these moments all the time! it's so weird because most days i don't feel any different than i felt when i was seventeen/eighteen. but then, something will suddenly remind me that i'm twenty-six now.

twenty-six & planning a family in another year. it's all such a shock sometimes when i suddenly realize that in another year or so i'll be somebodies mama.

sometimes these moments are amazing & fun & sometimes these moments are a little bit scary.

  16. Yep, know what you mean. I have a 7 month old boy and as much as it feels right and wonderful, sometimes I just sit there and think, how is this little man all mine to look after?!?!
